ABOUT THE MEMBERS OF HOLOPHONOR:
Josh Johnson, alto saxophone, was born in Maryland and grew up near Chicago. An alumni of the 2012-2014 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, he holds degrees from Indiana University and UCLA. He is one of the co-founders of the genre-defying ensemble, Snaarj, whose latest release “Levels” was described as “a substantial work full of deep textures, deft musicianship and expertly crafted compositions” (Kyle Long, NUVO). Josh has performed with Rubén Blades, Jeff Parker, Aretha Franklin, and Damion Reid among others. He is currently based in Los Angeles, where he maintains an active teaching and performing schedule.
Mike Cottone, trumpet, was born in Rochester, NY. He has degrees from The Eastman School of Music, The Juilliard School, and is a 2012-2014 alumni of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. Mike has performed with Tony Royster Jr., Carl Allen, Bob Sheppard, John Beasley, Ralph Moore, Henry Franklin Sr., Rubén Blades, Mike Garson, Ulysses Owens Jr., The LaBarbera Brothers, and many others. Now a full time resident of California, Mike is actively performing and teaching throughout the Los Angeles area.
Eric Miller, trombone, was first soloist for the Nassau-Suffolk Jazz Ensemble at age 14, before participating in the Skidmore Summer Jazz Institute, Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program, New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band Classic, and the Gibson Baldwin GRAMMY Jazz Ensemble, while in high school. Eric received his bachelor’s degree in jazz studies from Manhattan School of Music, and in 2010 he won the International Trombone Association’s Carl Fontana Jazz Trombone Competition. He has performed with Jonathan Batiste, John Beasley, John Ellis, Michael Dease, Daniel Jamieson, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All Star Big Band and the Christian McBride Big Band among others.
Diego Urbano, is a self-taught vibraphonist from Santiago, Chile. He developed his career as a highly in demand sideman, leader and teacher in the local scene before relocating to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he expanded towards Avant-garde and Free Jazz, along with the country's best musicians. He is the first south american musician ever to be selected to study at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. After graduation, he relocated to New York City where he plans to further develop his career. He released his second album as a leader, ''Begs the question'' in late may.
Miro Sprague, piano, was born and raised in Western Massachusetts and began playing piano at age 13. He received a bachelor's degree in jazz piano performance from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Jason Moran, Gary Dial and Chris Rosenberg. Miro has toured the United States, Europe and Japan and has performed with Greg Osby, Reggie Workman, Rashied Ali, Sheila Jordan and Matt Wilson, among others. Miro is a recent graduate of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and is currently based in Los Angeles.
Dave Robaire has become one of the most in demand young bassists in today's jazz world. An alumni of the 2012-2014 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance, he performs mostly as a sideman or as a co-leader in the collectively formed group "Holophonor," while occasionally leading his own group. Having lived in both New York and Los Angeles, Robaire has found himself working with a diverse collection of artists including Wynton Marsalis, Gilad Hekselman, Ambrose Akinmusire, John Ellis, and Dave Liebman among many others. Although the music has taken him all over the world, Robaire's current home base is Los Angeles, where he was born and raised.
Los Angeles native Jonathan Pinson is an in demand drummer on the scene. He received his undergraduate degree, under full scholarship at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, followed by his Masters Degree at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. Jonathan has performed or toured with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dave Liebman, John Patitucci, Ambrose Akinmusire, Greg Osby and Danilo Perez just to name a few. He currently resides in Los Angeles, constantly working on projects as well as teaching.
